NOW Spinning 3/25/2020: Cannonball Adderley Quintet- "in Chicago",1959

One familiar with jazz may be quick to recognize the name Cannonball Adderley, and that is due to his long-lasting impact he has made on the genre. Cannonball, an alto jazz saxophonist, has not only made fantastic records himself as a leader but also as a supporting saxophonist. As proof, shortly after this record was recorded, Adderley and his Quintet (with the exception of Bill Evans replacing Wynton Kelly on all tracks but one) went on to play on Miles Davis's seminal album "Kind of Blue" later that year.
This 1959 pressing of "In Chicago" is magnificent. I saw the album at my favorite record store, Rogue Planet Music, and was drawn to it by the cover. The cover is blue, has a a rough figure resembling Adderley holding a sax, and is adorned with fun fonts and colors that pop. Atop the album reads "STEREO" in bold blue letters; this has to be one of my favorite jazz covers of all time. It sounds and feels great, tunes such as " Stars Fell on Alabama" and "Grand Central" stand out, although there is not a bad cut on the record. I am glad I picked this copy up, as I see it being a staple in my collection, receiving it's fair amount of spin time.
