Analog Kid Spins: Dorm Edition

As I packed up for yet another year in the dorms, the challenges I faced were not "What clothes should I bring?" or "Do I have enough space in my room for this, too?"

I struggled with the question of "Which records should I bring?"

Narrowing down a carefully curated collection of 400+ albums to a select 20 is one of the most difficult situations a collector will face. I wanted to include everything that was important to me, but I'm a collector... EVERYTHING is important. To approach this, I thought about what moods I may be in, and what certain records reminded me of.

John Mayer- "Continuum" reminds me of my sister, Delaney. (It is one of her favorites)

Rush- "2112" reminds me of my dad.

Kanye West- "Jesus Is King" reminds me of my brother, Noah.

Frank Sinatra reminds me of my grandparents.

Jason Isbell reminds me of my mom.

The White Stripes- "De Stijl" reminds me of my best-friend, Jake.

And on

it goes......

In a time where I will be spending the majority of my day in my room, it was ESSENTIAL I pick the right albums. Whenever I am feeling a certain way, I will put on a specific album and feel better. It will bring me closer to those that I miss.

I knew there was no way I would get through the semester without a set-up, which is why I made sure that I had room for it before anything else. It NEEDED to work. Records transport me to another place. In many instances, they place me front and center in the same room with the musician. Erroll Garner- "Magician" is the perfect example. Barely audible behind his masterful piano playing is his voice as he grunts with every key. I feel like he is right there. I'm taken from this world of negativity, and placed into a smoke filled, dim, peaceful lounge. Garner on stage, spotlight on him. I need that.
